Look at what in the course I found particularly engaging and relevant to my work

  • Look at what I would like to pursue in a more rigorous way
  • About what am I curious?
  • About what do I feel excited to explore it critically?
  • What did I find problematic, would I like to unravel?

PLAN:

Have to keep record or process in sketchbook as well as in log

Look at ideas in a visual way, find connections and possible arguments – I can use padlet to develop

Use good reference sources (books, journals, interviews, quotations and use Harvard ref system

Also have a list of illustrations

THINKING ABOUT THE COURSE:

  • We looked at 6 themes of engaging
  • Themes were linked to writing about art as a practice
  • How did it influence and affect my own practice?
  • How did it enable me to understand my practice?
  • How did it enable me to articulate this understanding to others/viewers?

ACTIONS: WORK I COULD PURSUE

Practice

Process, repetition –

By placing most of my focus to unpack the act of walking, repetition, imprinting, tracing, re-tracing,layers of sensation and embodied drawing my thinking of the work is not a finished thing, but explorative. I will pick key ideas from thinkers and artist to show alignment with my practice, in particular relational art and aesthetics.

Meaning (Understanding/Interpretation) – how I explore or need to explore materials and use context within my practice. How I can use my research about place and find alignment within my practice? I feel confident to pick key thinkers/artists/ways of working and will reference feminist, psychoanalytic and Cultural heritage when I look at sense of home, power and social politics by looking at Trinh T Minh-ha. I explored the ideas of Karla Black as well. I believe the sense of in betweenness is very authentic to my practice.

Responding to a site

My making through trace and mapping will continue with making around the ideas of Deleuze and Guittari by exploring the body in a view ways within the act of walking as a performance and question, whilst also being an onlooker or outsider. My tutor suggested that “there is something here about being a tourist, of being nomadic, or not having any roots to a place that Nicholas Bourriaud talks about in his book The Radicant, in terms of obliterating the sense of the wanderer, to install more borders and crossings within society, something that weeds/flowers/nature has little regard of. You may be interested in the work of Doreen Massey titled Space, Place and Gender that may be of interest.” I started reading The Radicant and see many influences I can analyse in my walking practice and use to address questions I started to articulate.

where does the parallel project fit in this review?

Looking at the study guide:

It is an extended project in addition to the course work. I did separate blog post during each part of the course.

  • In addition to working on the course materials you will work on the Parallel Project which is a self-directed, extended project.
  • This is an opportunity to pursue independent research in an area or topic of your own choosing. ( I used my walking practice)
  • The focus of this project is entirely up to you, although you are advised to use the ideas and approaches explored within the course exercises as a +springboard to inspire your thinking and making process. (practice as process of experimentation, repetition, voice, site, meaning, transformation)
  • You may work in the studio as well as in text based formats for your Parallel Project. (Daily drawings and researched topics around other artists and painting as well as drawing)

research within the walking practice has brought me to a few questions I would like to refine to one and address in the critical review for part 6.
1. DOES WALKING AFFECT MY PRACTICE IN THE SENSE THAT IT ENABLES ME UNDERSTAND IT AS SOMETHING THAT I CAN ARTICULATE TO OTHERS ?
2 CAN I RAISE WALKING AS A QUESTION ITSELF ABOUT REALITY AND GESTURE?
3. DID I FIND MY VOICE IN WALKING? (Raised awareness of self and other and encounters where words fail to exist, more than what meets the eye and experience of in betweenness and temporailty)

4. CAN WALKING BE A PERFORMANCE IN ITSELF
